Castle Gateways
As explained in our section on castle defence and attack, the weakest point of any medieval castle was usually the castle gateway. Castle designers and architects therefore focused much energy on developing ways to fortify this part of a castle including:
drawbridges
angled entrances
constructing a barbican
Photograph shows one of the gateways to Alnwick Castle one of the great medieval castles in England.
The castle designers knew to fortify this area as well as construct a barbican (on the opposite side of the castle not in the photo)
