Le Château de Fougères- France
The House of Amboise built the first wooden fort on the site in the eleventh century. This was unfortunately burned down in 1166 after it was besieged and taken by King Henry II of England. However, very soon afterwards, Raoul II Baron de Fougères built a new castle on the site. Suprisingly, the château de Fougères was not involved in the Hundred Years' War until 1449 when in a bold move, the castle was taken by an English mercenary. In 1488 after a siege, the French troops won the castle back and the castle lost its military role. Today this huge and impressive French castle is one of Europe's largest medieval fortresses.
